چکیده

Entity–relationship (ER) modeling is a widely accepted technique for conceptual database design. However, the complexities inherent in large ER diagrams have restricted the effectiveness of their use in practice. It is often difficult for end-users, or even for well-trained database engineers and designers, to fully understand and properly manage large ER diagrams. Hence, to improve their understandability and manageability, large ER diagrams need to be decomposed into smaller modules by clustering closely related entities and relationships. Previous researchers have proposed many manual and semi-automatic approaches for such clustering. However, most of them call for intuitive and subjective judgment from ‘‘experts’’ at various stages of their implementation. We present a fully automated algorithm that eliminates the need for subjective human judgment. In addition to improving their understandability and manageability, an automated algorithm facilitates the re-clustering of ER diagrams as they undergo many changes during their design, development, and

An Automated Forecasting Tool (AFT) achieved by clustering Entity Relationship Model

Entity–relationship (ER) modeling is basically a technique of creating model before the detail database is formed. One the ERM or Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) is complete and correct then it is feasible to convert into database design directly. The database design will also be complete and correct, as it is based on verified ERM and ERD. To increase the usability and understandability of E...

Extending ER Model Clustering by Relationship Clustering

The entity relationship approach is a widely accepted method for conceptual database design. However, some problems arise if ER modelling is applied to the design of really large databases concerning whole enterprises. There is, e.g., no way to obtain a general view nor to perceive the global context of a detailed enterprise scheme with hundreds of entity and relationship types. Different appro...

Containment of Conjunctive Queries over Conceptual Schemata

Conceptual Modelling plays a fundamental role in database design since Chen’s Entity-Relationship (ER) model. In this paper we consider a conceptual model capable of capturing classes of objects with their attributes, relationships among classes, cardinality constraints in the participation of entities to relationships, and is-a relations among both classes and relationships. We provide a forma...

Conceptual Clustering in Structured Databases: A Practical Approach

Many machine-learning (either supervised or unsupervised) techniques assume that data present themselves in an attribute-value form. But this formalism is largely insufficient to account for many applications. Therefore, much of the ongoing research now focuses on first-order learning systems. But complex formalisms lead to high computational complexities. On the other hand, most of the current...

FORM FINDING FOR RECTILINEAR ORTHOGONAL BUILDINGS THROUGH CHARGED SYSTEM SEARCH ALGORITHM

Preliminary layout design of buildings has a substantial effect on the ultimate design of structural components and accordingly influences the construction cost. Exploring structurally efficient forms and shapes during the conceptual design stage of a project can also facilitate the optimum integrated design of buildings. This paper presents an automated method of determining column layout desi...
